Florida Hurricanes Unearthed A Shipwreck In An Unlikely Place, And It Sent Locals Scrambling

As 2022 crept to an end, Florida’s Daytona Beach Shores was being battered by storms. The whole coast was in the process of being torn up and reshaped. It was a terrifying sight to behold, but then an unexpected shape began to emerge. The extreme Florida weather had inadvertently revealed a secret hidden beneath the sands — and locals couldn’t wrap their heads around it.

An unusual year

People living around Daytona Beach Shores, Volusia County, are used to things like this happening. It’s not as if intense storms reshaping the coastal landscape is a new phenomenon. On the other hand, while beaches are always subject to processes of erosion, 2022 was an unusually severe year for storms smashing the region.

Ian and Nicole

A pair of storms in September and November — named Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Nicole respectively — were really severe. In fact, the region hadn’t seen anything quite like them in some time. Ian was especially bad, considered to be one of the most intense weather events in all of America over the last decade.

Unprecedented erosion

Tammy Malphurs is the deputy chief of Volusia County Beach Safety, and she spoke to local news station WKMG-TV about the extreme coastal changes induced by these recent storms. “This erosion is unprecedented at this point,” she suggested. “We haven’t seen this kind of erosion in a very long time.”

Food for thought

And, of course, it was this weathering that helped to reveal whatever was hidden beneath the sands of Daytona Beach Shores. Amid the stress of dealing with the aftermath of the storms, this did at least provide locals with a little exciting food for thought. What on Earth had been uncovered? Well, theories varied wildly.
